China Builds Cosmic-Ray Observatory

After already commissioning the world’s largest telescope, China is now in the midst of constructing the world’s biggest and most sensitive cosmic-ray facilities for some US$180 million. The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory, which is located nearly 4,500 meters above sea level in China’s Sichuan Province, will search for the source of high-energy cosmic rays. The project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in late 2015, but the observatory will not be complete until 2021.
