It would be a mistake for Canada to pursue an FTA with China while there remains so much uncertainty regarding NAFTA negotiations, notes Joshua Brown, Tractus Asia Chief Representative for Canada. Brown believes Canada cannot afford to antagonize US President Donald Trump with such a move. According to a recent poll conducted by the Globe and Mail, almost 90% of Canadians do not want to grant China unrestricted access to Canada’s economy. On the other hand, the percent of Canadians in support of a Canada-ASEAN FTA has grown substantially since 2014. Some 54% of Canadians are now in favor, according to a 2016 Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada poll.
