Economic Performance Questioned

Official data from China may drastically underestimate the country’s economic performance, according to a recent report by the Massachusetts-based National Bureau of Economic Research. The study used satellites to track and record nighttime lights in China as an indicator of the country’s economic performance. By this measure, the Chinese economy is performing significantly better than data suggests. A number of historical events have shown that a higher degree of nighttime lights is highly correlated with increases in economic activity.
