Northern Ireland Pushes for China Ties

Northern Ireland is eyeing closer ties with China to protect itself from uncertainty as the UK prepares to leave the EU. Last week, more than 100 Chinese provincial and municipal leaders gathered in Belfast for the third UK-China Regional Leaders Meeting. “Brexit has prompted us to more actively engage with new markets further afield, and China is a key focus,” states Beijing bureau of Northern Ireland’s executive office Director Tim Losty. Until recently, Northern Ireland focused heavily on expanding trade and business ties with North America and other European countries but is now recognizing all that China has to offer.
